Re: Fall 2017 - Papaya - Querkle - Mass Medical
Reminds me of my first couple of rounds. It was so much fun and so exciting I couldn't keep my hands off. Two of the most common mistakes of new growers is over-fertilizing and/or over-watering, the third is probably over-zealous trimming. I did that all, and more. The thing to remember is that most...

They look lovely -- I have no idea what the negative comments could be -- but I do wonder, why did you trim so much?

Re: A Sneak Peek at Some HLG QB Prototypes
The main appeal behind the Nichia seems to be the 90 CRI availability. Regarding the 480 chip board, I think its utility would really depend on its price. If it doesn't cost a whole ton more than a regular QB, you should be able to get some wicked efficiency by driving it quite low. When comparing ...

Re: A Sneak Peek at Some HLG QB Prototypes
Not sure how I feel about this. Isn't part of the nice thing about mid-power LEDs that you don't need expensive heatsinks / active cooling? I'm also not sure I see the point in fitting 480 diodes so tightly, given that at 600W you're probably looking at a 4'*4' space. And by pure coincidence, earlie...

Anybody in Europe for a bulk purchase?
In about a month, mid-January or so, I would like to place an order for LM561c/LM301b strips/PCBs. Buying in bulk, as you all well know, can offer significant discounts. On Digi-Key it's in the range of 40-50% off the single-unit price when going over 100-250 units. (If I manage to figure out who is...

Re: Absolute newbie builder needs some buying advice
Very generally speaking, with LEDs you'd like to be aiming at 35W/square foot, so for the space that would be roughly 600W. How many LEDS does that translate too would be your call. With Vero 29 (please note there are 3 types, B/C/D if I'm not mistaken) on average you'd be looking at 50W/COB with th...

100W COBs / LED arrangement
There was a point a while back I was thinking about ordering generic 100W COBs. Here's why I'm happy I didn't: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wR_mFWeI6Y (see his 1st video too if you've got the time.) It was interesting to learn a bit about how the board is built with layers. I haven't seen such a...

Re: Automated control system - any experience or directions?
As for adding new pH/TDS, I bet he would consider some help to add those features. OpenSource community stuff and all. I can't imagine it would be super hard to import code from other people open projects using it. I'm slowly taking my first steps with Python in the meanwhile too. Unfortunately goo...

Re: Are reflectors really worth the trouble?
I wonder how the geotropic roots would respond? My experience, watering with the Blumat Tropf system, is that roots grow towards wherever the water is at. Look at videos of grows using the system and you'll find "root mounds" 2-4 centimeters high. Of course I might be completely wrong about all of ...

Re: Are reflectors really worth the trouble?
The idea still tickles me, but it sleeping on it I realized it definitely require serious water-proofing for the LEDs (places beneath the pots...). That alone pushes it to be next-year's project -- there are enough experimental improvements lined up for this coming spring
