Thermal compound or not? on COB

Discuss COBs or any other types of LEDs that don’t fit the other categories (Cree, Citizen, Migro, etc.).

I grabbed all my components and by this weekend I was finally piecing them together and testing/mounting..

but I'm just now noticing that I have these big http://www.rapidled.com/140mm-pin-heatsink/ pin heatsinks
and my vero29 that will mount on them, but on the back of the vero, should I be using thermal pads? or thermal compound?

I have never mounted any COB but I would assume it would help.

these pin heatsinks will screw on so they are presumably tight. But it just worries me about thermal dissipation to the metal on the heatsink.

thanks,

Yeah, you definitely need a thermal interface material of some type. Thermal pads are the bare minimum but thermal compound/grease/whatever you want to call it is far better.

Yes! Get a tube or syringe of the "grease". Don't worry about getting too much, you'll use it eventually... probably sooner than you think.
You might wanna double-check anything you've read here...

Don't worry about buying too much, but be sure not to use too much at a time. Just a more than a cherry pit for your Vero29, to be spread evenly with a credit card. I'm too lazy to look it up for you, but Bridgelux has a video on youtube explaining the whole thing.
