What affects growth direction?

Hey folks. I’m looking to find out what affects the direction plant growth grows towards.

Is it light intensity?
Or
Is it kelvin influence?
Or
Something else?

Anybody know or can point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I believe @unkle_psycho has done some research on this. From what I remember regarding his posts, it seems like a high kelvin light source like 5K will beat light intensity for growth direction say versus a stronger 2700K light source. I was thinking about eventually experimenting with side lighting and different strains to influence height and stretching during flowering but haven't been able to yet.

Here’s something interesting that just happened to one of my girls. Take a look at the tip of her cola.

You can see that she has suddenly elongated between buds. I don’t believe it was stretching due to lack of light but more so because it was being drawn towards the 5000k Optisolis strip that was directly above it at the time. I have moved the plant a few inches towards the 3000k strip to see if she suddenly brings her buds closer together. I’m tempted to put her directly under the 3000k but I’m too damn close to harvest to screw around with things too much.

I’m not too sure just how high I should have them at. They are running approx 30 watts on the 3000k and approx 23 watts on the 5000k.

Hopefully one of the gurus here can help with suggestions for height. All the math to calculate par is something I can never grasp 🤣

It looks like having the 2 separate color tempratures might be causing some sort of weird stretch. I'm not sure exactly if thats the issue but that's what it looks like.
Normally when using 2 different colors you keep them close together so it blends.

I could slide the ribs closer together.

What do you figure should be a good hanging height above canopy?

You would need to check it with your lux meter. About 50,000lux is about right. If you slide them closer together you will see a drop between the strips, you want to raise it until that drop starts to fade off

Thanks @TEKNIK. I’ll have to start some sampling.

It can take a couple of grows to get used to what works best for you, it can be different for everyone as there are alot more factors going on in a room apart from just the light that effects growth

To me this looks normal, well, nothing to do with light quality or phototropism. It looks like it's only happening on the parts that are seeing intense light.

Ya. That tip was directly under the 5000k strip. I don’t know if it was light color or light stress, but something made it go freaky-deeky.
