Need help with a diy strip light.

Strip light questions and discussions go here (Samsung, Bridgelux, Photo Boost, Growcraft, etc.)

Hey all, Im planning on building a new strip light using HLG's new Saber 100 https://horticulturelightinggroup.com/c ... -saber-100.
I plan on using 80/20 extrusion.
I was going to go with 6 of these in a 4x4 and run them soft. Ive only built one light awhile ago so Id appreciate any input as I dont know what driver to choose.
The strips are 36v. 120 watts max. The maximum current is 3,200.
What driver should I use to run them soft?

they are roughly 63w each at 1750ma.. 75w each at 2100ma.. 100w each at 2800ma..

a hlg-480h-c2100 has enough voltage room for up to 6 sabers.. that's what I most likely would use for a 4x4.. especially since I have one sitting here collecting dust πŸ˜„

have you contacted hlg about how to mount them?? I didn't see a picture of the backside of the heatsink. and I'm wondering if these will have a similar problem to green genes new heatsink profile.. a simple t nut and 3/4" machine screw might not work to connect to 80/20.. we might have to spend $$ to get them attached... just a thought...

Hey jolly, you helped me with my first build thanks.
Yes I contacted them and they sent me a photo of the back
Saber.jpg
It does not look compatible with an 80/20 extrusion. I dont even know how I would mount these to angled aluminum without them flopping around on the frame.
Will the driver you mentioned allow me to run them soft and close to maximum power if I wanted more light?
They told me for 6 to go with 2 HLG-320H-2800. Will that allow me to run them soft and to max power?
I dont even know how I would connect these two drivers (if thats possible).
Id like to have one single driver to be able to run them soft and close to their rated max if possible.
Thanks man, I appreciate the time!!

Ok they told me the screws on the side allow to put a L shaped aluminum on them and thats how I would be able to mount them on the 80/20. Im not sure if its the middle hole at the top or the two on the bottom. Either way all I need is the driver part.
So which driver option should I go with Jolly?

sweet you got a pic.. yeah 80/20 should work.. we just going to need to use the inside channel instead of the bottom channel to put t nuts in. 😁

100w of 115-120w isn't really soft imo... I would think soft would be half or under.. the 1750ma -2100ma range /63- 75w. . the 2 320h-c2800's would give ya 600w with 6 bars... or the hlg-480h-c2100 would give almost 500w with the same 6 bars, but ran softer and cooler..

so
dual 320h-c2800 with 6 bars if ya want 600 watts /most power
a hlg-480h-c2100 with 6 bars if ya want to run them softer but plenty of light for the space..
if you want 600w and ran softer dual hlg-320h-c2100 would need 8 sabers over 6.. then you get both! 😁

Ok ill try the 480-c2100. How much ppf and ppfd would this light with that driver produce? I forgot how to calculate it. I have to look in my inbox.

how it's not easily connected with 80/20.. the center of the fins on the back looks like another t slot.. so you can't get to the head of a screw to tighten.. it would need a weird double t nut ended machine screw that you could tighten from both sides or something. it just complicates the super easy prototype build that he was going for.. I can't remember what the ends fully looked like.. might be a easier way to attach 80/20..

I was hoping you could offer some assistance with these same light strips? I'm trying to find the correct driver to drive 8 of the sabre 100 at around 87 watts each for a total of 700w between 2 drivers.
Hlg sent me this link https://www.findchips.com/search/HLG-480H-C2800A for drivers that are dimmable but I noticed that the driver you recommended was slightly different so I'm trying to figure out the difference and which driver would work best for my scenario. The link they provided shows several different drivers and I'm not sure how they differ from 1 another or which 1 I should buy? Any light you could shed on this would he tremendously appreciated and helpful.

they recommend the hlg-480h-2800a because it can hit over that 87w per strip, but also for driver efficiency... with the -2100 they would only hit 75w ish.. and the hlg-320h-c2800a does not have the voltage room for 4 each.. and since the hlg-480h-c2100 can hold 6 bars, only 4 wouldn't give you the best efficiency of the driver.. ( 4x36 = 144v.. 144v of 229v max = 63% of driver max voltage..)

I would agree with Steve and Amit.. use duo hlg-480h-2800's and slightly dim them back a little.. so you'll be at that 700 range, but have ability to crank up to just over 800w.
