Can you have too many?

Strip light questions and discussions go here (Samsung, Bridgelux, Photo Boost, Growcraft, etc.)

Just looking to build a small light using the details contained here - Example Builds

Can I add too many strips for a given area though? e.g a 2'x4' uses 14 strips but a 3'x'3 uses 18 strips with the same driver. I'm I wasting my time adding the additional 4 strips into a smaller build?

Yes, you could add too many strips.

Its actually not the quantity of strips its the total output, for the specified grow area, e.g., Samsung F-564B 560mm strips have 2 - 3 times the Lumens output as the Bridgelux BXEB 560mm and Samsung H-Series 560mm strips.

To answer whether more strips are necessary You should first calculate your required Light, it needs to be "Sized" for the Grow Area... download/file.php?id=4438

For Example;
2' x 4' (8 sq ft) requires ~ 42,700 Lm, ~ 640 PPF @ 800 PPFD (Flowering CO2 enriched), only five (5) LT-F564B Strips with adequate heat sinks
3' x 3' (9 sq ft) requires ~ 48,000 Lm, ~ 720 PPF @ 800 PPFD (Flowering CO2 enriched), only six (6) LT-F564B Strips with adequate heat sinks
