Lumileds SunPlus 560 mm Supplemental LED Strip Build and Test

Lumileds Luxeon SunPlus Purple 2.5% LED Strips (32 LED) built with Samsung V562B PCBs. They are to be used as "PC Red" supplements for 80 CRI Samsung F-Series LED Lights at 10% - 15% of "Base Light" (F-Series) output.

Samsung V562B LED Strips with original LEDs, LEDs removed, and LEDs replaced with Luxeon SunPlus Purple 2.5% LEDs (initial power-up @ ~ 3 Watts each strip)

Lumileds SunPlus PC Red Supplemental LED Strips @ 15 Watts, ~ 25 PPF each strip

Note: Solder Pad Layout of Samsung and Lumileds 2835 packages... Anode (+) and Cathode (-) are reversed, this just means that the Wiring Terminals on the 32 LED PCB have to be relabeled...


Materials:
100 - L1SP- PRP0002800 - Lumileds SunPlus Purple 2.5% LEDs
3 - SI-B8(T)15156CWW - Samsung V562B 560mm, 32 LED Strips (CEM-3 PCB)
1 - Solder Paste in Syringe - Sn63Pb37 183°C
1 - Paste Flux

Tools:
858D Hot Air Rework Station
ESD-15 Anti-static Tweezers


The Build:
Removal;
1. Samsung V562B strips are prepped with small amounts of Flux Paste around the base of the 2835 LEDs.
2. Hot Air Rework Station is set to 400°C and used to Reflow the individual solder joints.
3. When the solder is flowing the Samsung 2835 LED are removed with the Anti-static tweezers.

Installation;
1. Samsung V562 PCBs are cleaned of flux with a dry cloth
2. Small amounts of Solder Paste are applied on the Anode and Cathode Solder Pads with the Syringe Dispenser.
3. Lumileds Luxeon SunPlus Purple 2.5% Blue 2835 LEDs are gently placed on the Solder Pads with the tweezers, observing the orientation.
4. Hot Air Rework Staion is set to 300°C and used to Heat the individual LED and Solder Pads with a circular motion.
5. When the solder is flowing SunPlus 2835 LED will be "Sucked" into place on the Solder Pad.
6. This Reflow procedure is started at one end of the PCB and repeated to the opposite end.



Preliminary measurements LED75W-025-C3000-D LED Driver @ 35 Watts after 6 hr run time are;

No...
Saw them but was not interested in trying them, they are only 660 nm with 460 nm. The requirement is for Red and Far Red supplement, SunPlus are “wideband” 600 nm - 800 nm with minimal 450 nm.

This is an application of the "PC RED" Supplement...

I wanted to thank you for posting this. Reworking a cheap strip opens so many possibilities! Your approach is very thorough and we'll documented (as always) so it's a pleasure to read.

As a side note I wondered if you had ever sourced cheap "metallic" pcbs, their name escapes me right now.

Did not find MCPCBs (Metal Core PCBs) or "Star" PCBs for 2835's but there are losts available for 3535's and Cree XP packages. BTW, prior to July 2020, had no idea what an "MCPCB" was...

So U basically upgraded the Samsung strips with the surplus line?

So U ended up with spare Samsung diodes?

Just got the Samsung Strips for the PCBs and yes, I have several dozen “used” Samsung 2835 LEDs.

Arrow is probably adjusting the price, upwards. They did the same a few weeks ago. The initial price for the strips was $0.26 each, adjusted up to $3.02 For one week then back down to $0.30, now at $6.20, suspect the price will drop again to $0.62 each in another week. Attached is a snapshot of my invoice detail from August 2020 from Arrow for the initial prototypes, $23.00 Total for 10 strips, 100 SunPlus LEDs including Tax, Tariff and Shipping (Free over $50.00)...

(I haven't looked at the data sheets I imagine they have dif electrical requirements?)

Didn't need the additional White LEDs (intended use as PC-Red Supplement) and also the Polarity (Anode - Cathode) is reversed as noted in the OP... Electrically they could have worked since they would have been in a Series Circuit... Lumileds does make a 2835 Horticultural White LED with 2.28 PPE (L1SP-PNK1002800000) that has the same Polarity as the SunPlus but its well below the 2.7 PPE of Samsung F-Series LM561C LEDs.

BTW, have a few 280mm strips (SIB8R08128CWW, $0.30 each) that will also be modified and tested.

I didn't find anything in the 420nm in a 2835 but I did find a decent UVB in that size
VioSys Z5 LEDs.

Did U go with the 2835 over the 2020 or 3535 for price or?
