I wanna do a samsung 301b build for a 4x4 area I wanna have a even spread ppfd around 1000. I'm planning on using 2 hlg 320 drivers. How many strips do I need to do this an are the drivers enough to do this

40w/ square foot should start being close to 1000ppfd, don't have a meter, and unsure about exact numbers. In general the more diodes you add, the better spread you will get, while also getting more lm/w from your strips.

There are quite a few different strips with LM301B diodes. Have a look at Q-series and H-influx series, the H-influx is newer, and has better heat characteristics.

welcome to the forum first off...

I hope budget isn't a issue.. your going to be spending $ 800-1000US at least doing this.. but you would be dropping $2k + on fluence or HLG etc to get similar results...

I figured 3 builds with different strips... I would use the 2x4 framework from the first video link for the first 2 options.. it's just easier to move solo over a single 4x4 frame.. the third option might work better/cheaper on sheet aluminum.. over so many heatsinks per 2x4...

first option ( and the one I would want most) is a green genes prototype strip build..

simple, easy to throw together and will crank out some light with a little added red..

second option would be the H-influx series ( the 1", 1.4a test current version. they have others) .. https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/ ... ND/8536580
you can copy Green genes build exactly with these strips... or add 2 more strips for 10 total and just squeak inside the dc V range..

option 3 uses the 4' ( 1120mm) Q series strip... https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/ ... ND/7562247
you would want to stick 10 of these in parallel on a HLG-320h-48b... if you go 21" of the 80/20 stock your spacing will be around 1/4" between heatsink.. it's going to be tight but even.. again sheet aluminum could be cheaper..( 1/8" thick at least ) after adding all the extra sinks, t nuts, n bolts

I hope that gives you some idea for planning your light...

I'm looking at the 4foot q series strips mostly I was thinking about 16 strips total. 8 per hlg 320 drive you think that's enough? I see with fluence they use multiple small drivers with around 6 to 8 strips. An since the diode count on the q series are low that's why I went with 16. 8 per driver wouldn't max them out so there would be room to add in the future if needed. Think 16 q series is enough?

8 LT-QB22A strips on an HLG-320H-48 would run the strips at ~0.84A each, very much near their rated max (.9A). That doesn't leave much room for error. If you get the -48A driver and you forget to dim it before turning on, it could run the strips at .95A each.

It's hard to recommend 8 Q strips on the 320H, they're too close to their maximum rating for comfort.

If you pinky-swear to dim the driver and/or add more strips later, it could work.

At least 12 4' Q strips per 320 driver is required to put the strips within 75% of their max rating.

I assumed 1A max.. why I went 10 over 12.. but yes 100% agree.. either 10/12 over 8

Ya, that's good advice @Shimbob.

I got really excited about using Q-series for an led upgrade. After doing the engineering for a couple of fixtures, I decided to go with Bridgelux EB gen 2 instead. It seemed easy to give up 5-10% efficiency for less expensive strips that provide more light. With a max of 1.4a, they run quite happily at 1a.

At our hydro rates, it would take the Q-series strips 2 years longer than the EB series to pay for themselves. Given the advancing market, I look at faster ROI as a major feature, so for us that was the deciding factor.

I'll suggest 2 aluminum sheets, 10 QB22's per HLG-320 on each. Those will be awesome lights!
